PRESS RELEASE: London Housing Foundation supports Your Place in Newham

London Housing Foundation is pleased to be able to support the ongoing work of Your Place in Newham.

Your Place have seen a significant increase in residents who have been referred holding refugee status. They recognised that more specialist support was needed to provide activities and guidance for these residents, as well as finding clear ways that they can move onto more permanent accommodation.

LHF has now agreed to fund a new role of Migrant Development Specialist to work with this client group.

Susan Smith, Head of Support Services at Your Place said:

“The routes into refugee status in the UK can have a deep impact on a person’s experience of homelessness, presenting challenges accessing housing as well as health, social welfare and advice services. This new post will work across teams to benefit residents who have migrated to the UK. We expect to support 120 residents from this group over the next year.”

Newham is the most diverse borough in London – with 69.2% of people identifying as members of ethnic minorities. This diversity is reflected in the resident group at Your Place: 98 out of 127 current residents identify as members of minority ethnic groups (77%).

Ian Brady of LHF said:

“We are very pleased to be able to support Your Place. Agencies are telling us that the needs of migrants are increasing across the sector. This initiative was informed by research carried out by LHF associate Becky Rice with Your Place which explored issues faced by non-UK nationals at Your Place.”
