London Homelessness Foundation backs Streetwise Opera

London Homelessness Foundation has backed Streetwise Opera to help people rebuild lives through creativity.

The London Homelessness Foundation (LHF) is proud to announce a new grant of £13,451 to Streetwise Opera, an award-winning homelessness and opera charity. The funding will support Streetwise Opera’s latest project, designed to help people with lived experience of homelessness develop the confidence, creativity and communication skills that open the door to new opportunities.

Streetwise Opera works with around 300 people each year in London, Nottingham and Manchester, using the power of music and performance to inspire self-belief and empowerment. Their workshops and performances help participants gain the skills and confidence to rebuild their lives.

“Streetwise is something I look forward to every week. It gives me confidence to stand in my truth. Yes, I might have been homeless but look what I’m doing — and these skills I can use elsewhere in different situations.”

Evidence shows that Streetwise Opera’s approach works. A recent survey found that over 80% of participants reported feeling confident “often or all of the time.” This confidence is crucial, only one in five of their participants are now in work or education and need support to progress out of homelessness.

With the cost-of-living crisis continuing to put pressure on those affected by homelessness, LHF’s support will help Streetwise Opera go one step further. The new project draws on the charity’s expertise in vocal delivery, presentation and performance to help participants develop the skills needed to shine in job interviews and workplace settings.

Working in partnership with two frontline homelessness services in London, Streetwise Opera will offer small group coaching sessions covering:

  • Confidence – breathing techniques, vocal projection and personal presence
  • Collaboration & teamwork – ensemble singing and group problem-solving
  • Creativity & innovation – encouraging flexible thinking and new approaches
  • Communication & presentation – using performance skills to strengthen clarity, body language and self-assurance

In the longer term, this project aims to increase participants’ success in interviews, helping them move into employment and stable accommodation. The communication and self-advocacy skills gained will also support them in all areas of life, from accessing services to building relationships.

“We are very pleased to continue our support for Streetwise Opera,” said Ian Brady, Executive Chair of LHF. “Their work shows excellent results in helping people who have been homeless to gain skills, find work, and move into more stable housing.”

Rachael Williams, Streetwise Opera’s CEO, added: “We’re incredibly grateful to the London Homelessness Foundation for their support. This funding will allow us to pilot an entirely new programme that uses tried and tested creative techniques to support people back into the workplace, which can be a significant step on the journey of recovery from homelessness.”
